Connections and Kairo Codes

Add trusted people, understand two-way connection setup, customize how they appear, and safely refresh a connection after reinstalling.

Connections are intentional

A connection is local to your phone. Adding someone does not silently add you to their phone, so both people should scan each other’s current Kairo Code. This independent model lets one person pause or remove a connection without remotely changing the other person’s private history.

Add a new connection

    Meet in person

    Open Profile on one phone and Add Connection on the other.

    Scan the Kairo Code

    Use Kairo’s scanner. Review the display name before confirming.

    Choose their local appearance

    Pick an avatar or emoji for how that person appears on your Home, Settings, and Timeline screens. Their Around avatar does not overwrite your choice.

    Swap roles

    Ask them to scan your code too. Nearby detection and command trust are established independently in each direction.

Scanning the same current identity again will not create a second memory history. Kairo updates the matching trusted connection rather than attaching existing memories to a new person.

Connection Settings

Kairo Moments

Pause or resume moment detection and nearby notifications for this person without deleting their timeline.

Notify when

Choose the proximity at which a detected signal may become a Kairo moment. Bluetooth distance is approximate.

Flare requests

Allow or block consent-based Find requests from this trusted person.

Local identity

Rename the connection or change their local avatar/emoji without changing their profile on their phone.

Refresh after a reinstall or new phone

A new installation creates new device identity and trust material. Existing connections cannot safely assume the new phone is the same trusted device.

    Keep the existing connection

    Do not delete and recreate the person. Open their Connection Settings.

    Choose refresh connection

    Kairo opens the scanner in refresh mode so the new device can be bound to the existing person record.

  3. 3

    Scan their current code in person

    Review and approve the replacement device. Ask them to refresh you too if your phone changed.
