Your documents and information
PaperKeep accesses only the documents, photos and files you choose to capture, import or share with the app. Documents may contain personal or sensitive information, including identity details, financial information, insurance information, addresses and information about other people. Please import or share information only when you are entitled to do so.
The app stores your original files, previews, extracted text, document names and types, metadata, household/person and related-item labels, confirmed dates, reminder settings, review history, relationships between documents and saved answers in its private storage on your device. It uses this information to display and organise your vault, provide search and source excerpts, suggest fields and schedule reminders. No PaperKeep account is required for these features.
Chaosphere apps does not operate a document-upload or vault-sync service in the current app. Your document contents are not sent to Chaosphere apps for scanning, text extraction, search or local AI. The current standard distribution does not enable ChatGPT sign-in or cloud AI processing. Any future distribution that enables cloud processing will require appropriate disclosures and consent before that processing is used.
Scanning and text recognition
PaperKeep uses Google's ML Kit and, where available, the Google Play services document scanner. Google states that ML Kit processes input images and text and recognition outputs on the device, without sending those inputs or outputs to Google servers.
These SDKs may contact Google for components, updates and compatibility information. They also send SDK performance and usage metrics to Google. Google's published disclosures include device and application information, per-installation identifiers and, for some downloadable features, device identifiers, along with diagnostic and performance information. These metrics are distinct from your document contents. They are handled by Google under its policies; they are not PaperKeep advertising profiles.
See Google's ML Kit privacy information, ML Kit's data disclosures and Google's Privacy Policy.
Optional local AI and model downloads
Local AI is optional. Search, manual document organisation and text extraction remain available without enabling AI. If you enable local AI and download a compatible model, the model runs on your device using relevant document excerpts. Generated metadata and answers may be inaccurate; you can review the source and correct or confirm fields.
Downloading a model contacts its hosting provider, currently Hugging Face and its delivery infrastructure. That provider receives information normally needed for a download, such as your IP address and the requested model file, and may retain service logs under its own policy. Your document contents are not included in the model download request. Opening model, licence or help links uses your browser and the destination's own privacy practices.
PaperKeep stores model files, download progress, the selected model identity, integrity information and your licence/usage acceptance locally. You can pause downloads and change whether AI is enabled. Hugging Face Privacy Policy.
Permissions and device features
- Files and photos: Android's pickers and share menu let you select files to import. PaperKeep may retain access to a selected file while completing the import. It does not need unrestricted access to all your photos or files.
- Camera: Capture is performed through the system camera or Google document scanner. Selected captures are used to create your document.
- Notifications: If you allow notifications, PaperKeep can deliver document reminders and display model-download progress. You can change notification permission and channel settings in Android. Android's battery and scheduling restrictions can affect delivery.
- Biometric or device authentication: If you enable app locking, Android performs authentication. PaperKeep does not receive or store your fingerprint, face template or screen-lock credential.
- Network and background work: Network access supports SDK components, optional model downloads and links. Background jobs support extraction, reminders and requested downloads. The app checks available storage, RAM and battery to manage these tasks; PaperKeep does not send those checks to a Chaosphere analytics service.
Storage and security
The vault database, search index, original files, previews and cached answers are encrypted using Android Keystore-protected keys. App locking adds an access control for the app interface. Depending on your settings, background extraction may be permitted while the interface is locked. App locking is not protection against a compromised device or operating system.
Processing and capturing files can temporarily require unencrypted files in app-private storage. The app removes processing files after use and performs startup cleanup; interrupted captures may remain temporarily until cleanup. Originals exported or shared outside PaperKeep are no longer protected by PaperKeep's vault encryption. No storage or security measure can eliminate every risk.
Backups and sharing you choose
PaperKeep can create password-encrypted portable backups and selected household exports at a location you choose through Android. The selected storage provider receives that exported file. The app does not automatically upload your vault to a PaperKeep server, and its private data is excluded from Android's automatic app backup.
You are responsible for keeping your backup and password safe. Chaosphere apps cannot recover a forgotten backup password or a lost device encryption key.
When you share an original or export documents, recipients receive the data you selected. Temporary in-app share access expires or can be revoked, but copies already received by another app or person cannot be revoked by PaperKeep. Files you originally imported and exported backups remain under your control outside the app.
Retention, deletion and your choices
Local vault information remains on your device until you delete documents or remove the app's data. Deleting a document removes its vault record, stored original, related previews and searchable entries, and invalidates cached answers. You can remove all local PaperKeep data through Android's app-storage settings or by uninstalling the app. These actions do not delete the source files you imported, exported backups or copies you shared elsewhere; delete those separately with the relevant storage provider or recipient.
You can choose whether to use AI, allow notifications, enable app locking and permit processing while locked. You can correct metadata and control confirmed reminder dates. You do not need a PaperKeep account to exercise these local controls.
Google, download hosts and any storage provider you choose have their own retention and deletion policies. For information held by them, use their published controls or contact them directly.
Advertising, analytics and support
PaperKeep does not include advertising, a Chaosphere analytics SDK or a third-party crash-reporting service in the current standard distribution. The Google SDK metrics described above may still be collected. We do not sell your document contents or use them for advertising.
If you email support, Chaosphere apps receives the information you send, including your email address and message, through its email provider. Avoid attaching identity papers, bank documents, passwords or other sensitive information unless necessary. We use support correspondence to answer your inquiry and investigate the issue. We retain it only as reasonably needed for that purpose and any applicable obligations. You can request deletion of support correspondence at the contact address above, subject to any lawful retention requirement.
Intended audience
PaperKeep is a general document-organisation tool and is not specifically directed to children. We do not knowingly solicit children's personal information through a PaperKeep account or server service. If you believe you sent us a child's information through support, contact us so we can address it.
Changes and contact
We may update this policy when the app's functionality or data handling changes. The updated policy will show a new last-updated date. Where required, material changes will be disclosed or consent requested before a new use of information begins.
